Kūkai

Kūkai (774–835), born in Sanuki, travelled to Tang China in 804. At Qinglong Monastery in Chang'an he received the Vajra Realm and Womb Realm transmissions from Huiguo in 805, returning to Japan the following year. He established the Shingon tradition and obtained permission to found a monastic centre at Mount Kōya in 816. He also directed esoteric Buddhist activities at Tōji in Kyoto. His Treatise on the Ten Stages of Mind sets out a classification of Buddhist and non-Buddhist teachings.
