Zongmi

Zongmi combined the Huayan scholarship of Chengguan with Chan training received from Suizhou Daoyuan in the Heze lineage. His Inquiry into the Origin of Humanity compares Buddhist, Confucian and Daoist explanations of human nature. His commentaries on the Sūtra of Perfect Enlightenment connect doctrinal study with meditation.
