Yixing

Yixing (683–727), born Zhang Sui, was a Tang monk, astronomer and mathematician. He worked with Śubhakarasiṃha on the Chinese translation of the Mahāvairocana Sūtra and recorded explanations that formed its principal Chinese commentary. At the imperial court he conducted astronomical research and organized observations used in calendrical reform. His work led to the Dayan calendar, which was adopted after his death.
