Shanwuwei (Śubhakarasiṃha)
Śubhakarasiṃha (637–735) was an Indian monk who arrived in Chang'an in 716. Working with the Chinese monk Yixing, he translated the Mahāvairocana Sūtra and explained its ritual and contemplative practices. Yixing recorded his explanations in a commentary that became central to East Asian esoteric Buddhism. The teachings associated with this scripture underlie the Womb Realm tradition. He is remembered with Vajrabodhi and Amoghavajra as one of the Three Great Masters of the Kaiyuan era.
