Shandao

Shandao (613–681) studied Pure Land practice under Daochuo at Xuanzhong Monastery before teaching in Chang'an. His Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra explains rebirth in Amitābha's Pure Land in terms of the Buddha's vows and the practices of ordinary people. He gave particular weight to reciting Amitābha's name while also teaching contemplation and liturgical practice. His writings became major sources for Chinese and Japanese Pure Land traditions.
