Fazang
Fazang (643–712) was born in Chang'an to a family of Sogdian ancestry and studied under Zhiyan. Supported by Empress Wu, he taught the Avataṃsaka Sūtra and participated in Buddhist translation projects. His writings explain the interdependence of all phenomena and classify Buddhist teachings into five categories. The Huayan tradition counts him as its third patriarch, and his Treatise on the Golden Lion illustrates its account of the relation between principle and phenomena.
